FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 10, 2002
To Advocates,
We need your immediate support for Assembly Bill
A1150 (see below) which provides for drivers to yield right of way to
pedestrians in a crosswalk regardless of which side of the roadway the
pedestrian is approaching. A full version of the bill can be read
on-line at http://www.assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=A11500
The current wording for Section 1151 of the NYS
Vehicle and Traffic Law only requires that the motorists yield to pedestrians in
their half of the roadway. This bill, if passed, would require
all motorists yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk in the same
roadway as the motorists is traveling when a traffic signal is not present or
not operating.
The New York Bicycling Coalition supports the
passage of this Assembly bill. The Senate has already passed this bill. The Bill
is being sponsored by Assemblywoman Glick from Manhattan. Please take a
few minutes of your time to e-mail her and your legislator to indicate
your support of Assembly Bill A11500. Find your legislator at http://www.assembly.state.ny.us/mem/
